Sheriff: attempted child abduction 'did not take place'

BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – The Norfork Police Department and Baxter County Sheriff's Office determined that an attempted child abduction that was reported in February 2014 never happened.

On February 26, officers with the Norfork Police Department took a complaint from a mother that an unknown man had chased her daughter home, and had tried entering their home shortly after.

The child initially told police that a man had gotten out of a maroon van, crouched down, and then started walking towards her. The child said the man followed her when she ran away. Five minutes later, there was a knock on her front door and someone moving the door handle.

The Baxter County Sheriff's Office and the Norfork Police Department followed up on leads and reported sightings of the suspect on several occasions.

The sheriff's office's launched a helicopter to help with the search.

Investigators interviewed the child and mother again on Tuesday. After a period of questioning, the child finally told her mother that the story was exaggerated and that no one had tried to abduct or harm her.

Investigators spent around 15 hours in total on this case.

Both law enforcement agencies involved said they don't plan to file any charges against the child for making false accusations.

In a news release, Sheriff Montgomery said the case was referred to the Baxter County Juvenile Services "for the purpose of potentially offering any services that might be necessary".
