STOW, OH (WOIO) -

Police in Stow, Ohio are investigating what appears to be a murder mystery after a routine welfare check.

Officers were called at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2014 to the 4400 block of Maplepark Drive by the victim's mother who hadn't seen her daughter in two days.

A Stow officer went to the residence, knocked on the front door and didn't receive a response.

As the officer walked to the back of the home, he noticed an open shed near the rear door.

He saw what appeared to be a hand protruding from underneath a pile of blankets inside the shed.

Neighbors like Adam Jordan are now on edge because of what officers found.

"It scared the living crap out of me. We're not used to that in this neighborhood," Jordan  told 19 Action News.

When the officer pulled back the blankets, he uncovered a woman's body.

The young woman wasn't responsive and didn't have a pulse.

Police are not yet releasing the woman's identity, but neighbors believe she was in her 20s. We're told her body showed signs that she died a violent and painful death. Her killer remains at large. Police could release more information Monday, March 17, 2014.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been notified along with Stow EMS and the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities are treating this as a homicide.

Anyone with any information that can lead police to an arrest are urged to call Detective Steve Dunton at 330-689-5707.
