Local high school robotics team wins regional title

Posted: Updated:
Myrtle Beach, SC (WMBF) - The Academy for Arts Science and Technology robotics team, Aluminum Assault, is this year's winner of the North Carolina FIRST Regional Robotics Competition, according to Coach Bucky Sellers.

The team competed against 54 teams from a dozen states to test their engineering, programming and problem-solving genius in Raleigh over the weekend.

Bucky Sellers, the team's coach and mentor said the team put up a tough fight and had to change its strategy after experiencing some malfunctions.

"It was a hard-fought competition. We had to change our strategy to defense after some pieces broke on the robot in mid-competition," said Sellers, "but it's amazing how things turn out."

This is the first win for the school in eleven years.

Sellers began mentoring robotic teams in 2004. He says they've earned second place several times but never made it to the top until now.

Now, it's onto the FIRST Robotics Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, where Aluminum Assault will rival with nearly 100 teams from 25 countries.

The competition begins on April 23.

This is the first school from the Palmetto state to participate in the championship.
