(WMC-TV) - Tunica County is facing a 17.3 unemployment rate, the second highest in Mississippi. That puts nearly one in five people in the county on the job hunt.

Despite being the second highest in the state, Tunica County's unemployment rate decreased from last year. The double digits, however, still trouble county leaders.

Supervisor James Dunn thinks the January numbers are deceiving.

"You're going to find that those numbers will decrease some more, simply because the farmers are back in the field working," he said.

Casino profits and visitors are down, forcing leaders to look for new industries to bring into the county.

Construction is underway for a new car plant at Greentech Automotive. Feuer Powertrain will soon make crankshafts in Tunica County, too. Both are expected to add jobs in 2014 if all goes according to plan.

"We expect 350 jobs to come with that industry," said Dunn.

Sherita Watson applied at one of the casinos Monday. If she does not get the job, she will begin looking to some of the newer industries to help her and the other 17 percent of Tunica County residents looking for jobs.

"If they had more stuff, then people would have more jobs and opportunity because we're struggling down here, trying to raise our kids, doing the best we can," said Watson.
