MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - There have been several hotel announcements recently in the Grand Strand, some where construction is underway, while others still stand as empty lots.

The South Beach Resort is the latest to make a move, and the plans are to add another 70,000 square-foot building on its property to help handle more guests. Meanwhile, The Homewood Suites Oceanfront Resort project was put on hold before the end of the year, and there's still no activity at the proposed location. There is the same situation with The Residence Inn Spring Hill Suites Oceanfront resort. The plan was to put that hotel near the 2nd Avenue Pier, but the city hasn't approved it, and no work has happened there either.

With the up and down hotel news, is this a good sign, or a bad one for our local economy? City Spokesperson Mark Kruea says it's normal activity for hotels, since they are such large developments.

"The economy is recovering certainly from the great recession," explained Kruea. "We've seen tourism numbers, but the lending community needs to follow along. There are a lot of things that need to get in place before you can build a $40 or $50 million project."

One of those is getting approval from the City of Myrtle Beach. The city's appearance board will review the South Beach Resort hotel expansion at 1:30 Wednesday at city hall. As far as the other hotel projects, there are still plans to make them happen, it's just a question of when.
