Neighbors along Highway 414 near Reid Road in northern Greenville County say scrap metal thieves have been making life miserable for them for several weeks.

Neighbors said the rash of thefts started in early February.

Ruth Barnette said her home has been hit by the thieves looking for scrap metal to sell three times already.

"It's our junk, if it is junk," said Barnette. "And we want them to leave it alone."

Barnette said she even set up cameras around her house to catch the thieves in the act hoping to help deputies make an arrest because, she said, "When they are done taking what's outside, they are coming inside."

Another neighbor, Manning Farmer, said he caught the thieves stealing metal from his property on Monday and it almost cost him his life.

"I pulled in the driveway and they were pulling off with a truck load of stuff," said Farmer. "And they tried to run me over."

Farmer said the men got away with some metal but left one of their cars behind because it got stuck in the mud.

Deputies said they have signed warrants on three people in connection with the incident at Farmer's house and are working to get them in custody. Deputies said the men may be connected to the rash of thefts in the area.

Audith Newman and Benjamin Williams, both of Taylors, have been charged with larceny of less than $2,000 in connection with the thefts, according to warrants provided by Master Deputy Jonathan Smith.

Barnette said she is glad deputies are taking the problem seriously.

"We just want help," Barnette said.
