CARTER COUNTY, TN (WCSC/WJHL) - A pilot and two passengers were injured Tuesday when the the small plane they were traveling in crashed in Tennessee after taking off from Charleston, according to the Carter County Sheriff's Office.

According to multiple reports, the private plane crashed Tuesday around 7:45 p.m. on Holston Mountain, which is south of Bristol, near the Virginia border. Sheriff Chris Mathes described the scene as a "massive" rescue operation that went in to the early morning hours of Wednesday.

All three victims are listed in stable condition, although two were originally listed as critical, officials say.

Reports say the plane was rented Saturday for a trip from Ohio to Charleston, South Carolina.  Weather delayed the return flight, which had been scheduled for Monday. The plane left Charleston and made another stop in Greenwood, South Carolina.

According to WJHL, Carter County EMS crews said the plane stopped to refuel at Tri-Cities Regional Airport and crashed right after takeoff.

A spokesperson for the FAA says the plane was a Cessna 172 registered to Skypark Inc in Wadsworth, Ohio.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the cause of the crash.
