New animal shelter to be built in Troy

TROY, AL (WSFA) -

The City of Troy, along with other officials, is announcing plans to create a partnership to build a local animal shelter. The shelter would be a Pike Animal Shelter Partnership.

Along with Troy, the City of Brundidge, Pike County Commission, the Troy Animal Shelter Coalition, Inc. and the Human Society Of Pike County will contribute either financially or in-kind to the shelter partnership.

"I think this is the most exciting news to hit Pike County for animal lovers in recent years. The combination of these five entities building this shelter will benefit the citizens of Pike County and of course the needy animals within the county," said Pike County Humane Society President Jack Rainey. "We have all worked toward this goal and now it is becoming a reality."

Troy's current facility, which operates a 16-kennel facility for dogs, is not large enough to house as many dogs as are in need and does not offer any facilities for cats.

"This partnership is a sign of progressive elected leaders and compassionate volunteers working together to build something that will benefit generations to come," said Donna Shubert, the Troy Animal Shelter Coalition Founder's Society President.

The new Pike Animal Shelter will be located at 800 Henderson Highway.
