City officials look at transportation options for after school programs

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - With spring here, and summer right around the corner, you might be looking at summer activities to keep your kids busy.

Here in Jonesboro those activities aren't in short supply but city leaders want to make sure your kids have a safe, inexpensive way to get there.

"Transportation was the number one issue when it comes to children to get to safe and quality after school programs," Rennell Woods with the City of Jonesboro told Region 8 News.

Last year, Woods was named an after school ambassador for the state of Arkansas. His job is to locate and enhance after school programs in Region 8.

In speaking with parents and students last year about after school programs, the issue wasn't if there was one it was how to get there.

"Instead of hanging out and feeling trapped, you have your own JETS System to get you from point A to point B," Woods said.

He and other city officials rode two JETS bus routes Thursday afternoon. They were able to see here kids could get picked up and dropped off like at the Earl Bell Center, the Library and more.

Woods said many people don't realize there's this option.

"It's fairly new still...the riderships are going up but we want the parents and children aware that how important JETS is to our community," Woods said.

"We as community citizens can come together and find ways to get more children and supervised adults on the busses to get them to the places that they need to get empowered and strengthening these after school programs."

Woods said it will particularly come in handy during the summer when there's "nothing to do" and kids 18 and under can ride JETS for just a quarter.

You have to be 12 years old to ride JETS or be with someone 12 and older.

On Friday, March 21, Woods said a town hall meeting will be held to talk about what they learned during the bus routes and provide information on JETS to the public.

That meeting kicks off at 5:30 at City Youth Ministries.
