TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Dozens came together Monday night for a block watch meeting with Mayor D. Michael Collins, in an effort to curb crime in the city.

People in the neighborhood have a lot of pride and want to do whatever they can to help keep the area safe, which is why there was a big turnout at the meeting.

Daytime break-ins were one of the main concerns, along with tire, rim and catalytic converter thefts that have been happening overnight. Police say these crimes happen quickly and they're urging everyone to work together and help keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.

"I think there has been an uptick in all of the criminal activity, due to drug-related problems and unemployment. So when people get desperate, they resort to other sources. So this is why I'm here: to see what we can prevent," said resident Beth Solo.

Collins also reminded residents that the Northwest District Station is scheduled to open next week, so residents can expect to see a higher police presence in the area.

Residents feel meetings like this can only help. They believe communication with each other, the city, and the police can make a big difference.
