Sheriff: Scammers becoming more persistent, aggressive

WYNNE, AR (KAIT) – Investigators in one Region 8 community say scam artists are refusing to take no for an answer.

Cross County Sheriff J.R. Smith reports his office has received "numerous complaints of a scam becoming more persistent and aggressive."

Residents have received numerous calls from scammers claiming they have won $500,000, a new car and other gifts.

The victims are then asked to send a processing fee to collect their winnings.

In some cases, the sheriff says the con artists have asked residents for their banking and credit card information.

What's more, Smith says the scammers don't stop with one call.

"There are repeated calls trying to get them (the targets) to meet different places and send money," Smith stated.

The sheriff says it is definitely a scam and urges residents to not release any personal information to someone on the phone.
