JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Newly released data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows Craighead County's population is now estimated at over 101,000. Thursday, the bureau released its yearly population estimates.
The bureau had an estimated 101,488 in July 2013. That number is up from the July 2012 estimate of 99,920 and the official 2010 census of 96,443. Those numbers reflect a 5% growth over four years.
Craighead County was the only county in the region to show significant growth. In fact, the bureau reported a loss in population in many counties from 2012 to 2013. Greene County had a slight decrease year to year from 43,165 to 43,097, but higher from the 2010 Census number of 42,090.
Counties along the Mississippi River saw the biggest population declines. Mississippi, Crittenden, St. Francis, Lee, and Phillips Counties all saw significant declines from 2012 to 2013. The latest numbers also reflect a migration from rural to urban areas, a trend that does not show signs of slowing.
