COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

South Carolina's poison control officials are warning people of the dangers of liquid nicotine used in E-cigarettes.

The Palmetto Poison Center issued an alert Monday, warning of the dangers of the bottles of liquid nicotine that are used to refill the electronic cigarettes.

"The concerning factor with the liquid is the concentration of nicotine varies depending on the manufacturer," reads a statement from the Palmetto Poison Center. "Liquid refills may contain high amounts of nicotine that if ingested or absorbed by the skin can cause illness. Nicotine can cause vomiting, and even seizures in large amounts."

Earlier this month, an Oklahoma City 4-year-old was rushed to the hospital after drinking liquid nicotine from his mother's E-cigarette.

E-cigarettes are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, but their use is growing in popularity among both adults and teens.

"Just within South Carolina, the Palmetto Poison Center's data shows a 250% increase in the number of children and adults that have been exposed to these products from 2012 to 2013," said the statement from the center. "Due to the products often being brightly colored and highly fragranced with candy flavors of bubble gum, chocolate, etc, (sic) they can be very appealing children."

The center warns children are not the only ones affected by accidental exposure. Adults can be exposed by mishandling the liquid because it can be absorbed through the skin.

"Parentsshould be aware of this danger in their home," said Dr. Jill Michels, Managing Director. "The refill bottles, of any size, are highly concentrated and even a mouthful could be a medical emergency for asmall child.'

Poison Centers advocate keepingall potentially poisonous products up high and out of the reach of children. If you think someone has been exposed, call the Palmetto Poison Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222.This nationwide number will connect you to your local poison center. The hotline is a free, confidential, service that operates 24 hoursday to provide poison treatment advice and information to callers nationwide.
