Brutal winter triples overtime costs for Sylvania Township

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Like many other cities and townships in the area, Sylvania Township has been hit hard with overtime because of the brutal winter.

The township will pay plow drivers more than $59,000 in overtime for the winter, more than triple what they usually spend. Last winter, the township spent about $18,000 on overtime. The year before, that number was somewhere around $13,000.

The township has a $2.4 million surplus. Some of that money will be used to pay the overtime bill an avoid cutting other services.

"We do plan on overtime, we have leaf pick up, we have other items that we use some overtime for, but we have already planned for those when we developed the budget, so this is something that's very unusual. The storm, I mean we were hit the worst of anybody in the country this year," said Sylvania Township Director of Accounting and Budgeting James Eck.

Eck says it didn't help matters that many of the storms fell on weekends this winter, increasing overtime costs.
