RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (GreatAmericanConference.com) – Northwestern Oklahoma State's Shelby Anderson and Southern Arkansas' Shelby Miller shared the Great American Conference Softball Player of the Week honor while East Central's Sydney Dow garnered the Pitcher of the Week award for the ninth week of the 2014 season, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
GAC SOFTBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shelby Anderson, Northwestern Oklahoma State, DP/P, Jr., Mountain Home, Ark.
Anderson led Northwestern Oklahoma State to a 4-2 record during the week by hitting .737. She collected 14 hits in 19 at bats. She slugged her 12th home run of the season in the series opener against Harding to set the Ranger single-season record. In leading Northwestern Oklahoma State to a series victory against Harding, she hit .833 with five RBI.
GAC SOFTBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Shelby Miller, Southern Arkansas, RF/P, Fr., Brazoria, Texas
Miller produced a blistering week at the plate for SAU as she hit.684 (13-for-19) with 12 RBI during a six-game week. Seven of her 13 hits last week went for extra bases as she had three doubles and four home runs for a 1.474 slugging percentage. In the four-game series against the league-leading Savage Storm, Miller went 10-for-13 with four home runs.
GAC SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Sydney Dow, East Central, RHP, Fr., El Reno, Okla.
Dow doubled her win total for the season as she posted a 3-0 record on the week. In 18.0 innings of work, she allowed only 11 hits and struck out 21. She limited the opposition to a .169 batting average. Against Arkansas-Monticello she set the ECU single-season high with 12 strikeouts. She came back with a complete-game victory in the series finale.
NOTABLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
- Laramie Beal, OF, So., Southeastern Oklahoma State (Hit two home runs and drove in six while hitting .412 over six games)
- Amanda Berdon, IF, Fr., Harding (Hit three home runs in the Lady Bisons' series with Northwestern Oklahoma State)
- Gina Mengwasser, C/DP, Sr., East Central (Collected 18 total bases and a 1.125 slugging percentage during a six-game week)
- McKenzie Rice, 3B, Fr., Arkansas-Monticello (Hit .476 with a home run, eight RBI and six runs scored; posted a .542 OBP)
