ASU Men's Golf finishes T4 in Memphis Intercollegiate

MEMPHIS, Tenn. ( – The Arkansas State men's golf team shot a final-round 307 Tuesday at the Memphis Intercollegiate, completing the two-day tournament tied for fourth place among 15 teams with a combined 54-hole 896.

The Red Wolves posted a 295 and 294 during Monday's first and second rounds, respectively, to place them tied for third place entering the last 18 holes of competition.  Their combined 589 shot yesterday marked their best back-to-back rounds recorded this spring.

A-State finished tied with Cincinnati and ahead of Austin Peay State, Missouri State, Western Kentucky, UMKC, Belmont, Cleveland State, Xavier, Dayton, Georgetown and Oakland.  Memphis claimed the tournament title with an 874, while South Alabama finished runner-up and Louisiana-Lafayette third.

"This was one of our better finishes of the year, although we kind of let it get away from us the last six holes," said A-State head coach Steve Johnson.  "I'm glad to see our guys starting get their confidence back, and this was definitely a good finish with that type of field and our home event coming up next week."

Arkansas State was led by Easton Key, who finished tied for ninth with a combined 221 (72-70-79).  Key's total included a second-round 70, which was the lowest score of the tournament by an A-State player.

Following Key, Chance Holden and Seth Garner both tallied a 226 to end the tournament tied for 26th place.  Sean Brock and Matthew Loiacano both climbed in the standings on Tuesday, finishing tied for 29th and tied for 53rd, respectively.  Christian Helmbold, who competed as an individual, placed tied for 66th with a 238.

Arkansas State returns to action Monday-Tuesday, April 7-8, when it hosts the 18th Annual Red Wolves Intercollegiate at RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro.
