Democrats Expand Majority by Two Seats in Arkansas Legislature

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Complete but unofficial returns from Tuesday's election show the Democrats have an overall pickup of two seats in the Arkansas Legislature.

The change would bring the balance among both chambers to 99 Democrats and 33 Republicans.  The House would be led by speaker-elect Bill Stovall of Quitman, who has pledged to work with Governor Huckabee.

But Stovall narrowly defeated a candidate who had the governor's backing.

In the House, Democrats would have a 72-to-28 majority.  And in the Senate, they would have a 27-to-8 majority.
