BAY, AR (KAIT) - Region 8 gardeners planted a pop of color Saturday to bolster the Bay community.
Bay United Methodist Church hosted a groundbreaking for this year's community garden.
The USDA classifies parts of the city as food deserts, meaning areas where affordable and nutritious food is difficult to find.
The church's pastor hopes the garden will fill the food desert.
"We have to either go to Trumann or Truckerman to get fresh vegetables so we're encouraging the community to include fresh vegetables in their diets, not just fast food and pizza," Pastor Donald Lewert said.
Students will also learn about the plant growing process from seed to bloom and be able to grow their own vegetables.
