Meeting seeks to address concerns about proposed Mandeville fracking site

MANDEVILLE, LA (WVUE) -

More than 100 northshore residents voiced their concerns to state leaders Wednesday night about a possible fracking site.

State Rep. Tim Burns hosted the community meeting to help residents learn more about an oil company's proposal for a tract of land in Mandeville.

Helis Oil Corp. wants to use the technique of fracking to extract the oil. Fracking involves using hydraulic pressure to crack bedrock that frees oil to rise to the surface. However, residents at the meeting say they've heard about harmful chemicals from the process seeping into the water supply.

The state commissioner of conservation, Jim Welsh, says there's no evidence of that and insists fracking is safe. Welsh also says its likely the oil company's proposal will pass because it's legal to drill for oil in Louisiana.

Some residents at Wednesday night's meeting are now hoping their state lawmakers and parish leaders can get involved to stop the process.

A hearing on the matter is scheduled for next month.
