Mix-up stops LaVergne church's renovation project

LA VERGNE, TN (WSMV) -

Easter Sunday is a time for reflection and worship with your congregation for many, but the holiday is in jeopardy for some local church members.

It was around this time last year that Redemption Church started.

"They say about 85 percent of church plans fail within the first year and as of Easter Sunday it will be a year for us," said Pastor Jason Blackburn. "We haven't died yet. We're still pushing."

Working inside the building the church recently acquired has come to a halt.

The church was hoping to get some building material donated from 84 Lumber Company in Hendersonville.

"We got ready for the delivery date and everything kind of fell apart and we didn't have anything at that point," said Blackburn.

Apparently there was a mix-up between the church and a store associate. When it was time to ship the materials, that's when the mix-up was discovered.

"I know it left our church in dire straits, concerned how we would finish our project in time for Easter," said Blackburn. "We're doing our best to make it happen."

A company spokesman released a statement saying, "There was apparently a misunderstanding or miscommunication between a store associate and Redemption Church as to what paperwork was filled out. Redemption Church applied for a line of credit and not a donation request."

The church is hoping someone will donate lumber, drywall and plumbing materials.

"For it to be our biggest Sunday, we will have the biggest opportunity to reach the most people that we ever have," said Blackburn.

The church started about a year ago and within that time it has moved from location to location. Now there is a permanent building and church leaders hope there is still a slight chance they will be able to hold service there on Sunday.

"We'll do it outside in the parking lot," said Blackburn. "We're thinking about getting some food for everyone who comes. We'll do our best because we are reaching people regardless of what we have inside our building."

Home Depot has donated some material, but the church still needs about $2,500 to finish the building project.
