Centenary's Blount named Player of the Year

Posted: Updated:

Centenary College's Jonathan Blount was named the 2014 Louisiana Small College Player of the Year by the Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches as announced the association today. Blount becomes the first player from Centenary to earn the small college award, the seventh Gent to be honored by the LABC as a player of the year and the first since Andrew Wisniewski in 2004.

The award will be presented at the LABC's 40th Annual Awards Banquet on May 3 at 6 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Baton Rouge.

The accolade is the most recent for the Shreveport, La., native who was named to the Division III News All-America and National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District Team and most recently named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana First Team.

Blount led the league in scoring for the second consecutive year and set new single-season SCAC records this season for scoring average (24.4 ppg) and total points (682). He shot 49.7 percent from the field which was seventh in the SCAC, 43.4 percent from three-point range which ranked fourth in the SCAC and 85 percent from the free-throw line which was third in the conference.

A four-time SCAC Player of the Week this season, he set a new Centenary single-game scoring record with 53 points against Open Bible College on Feb. 18 and finished his career with 1,573 career points - eighth in program history and ninth in the conference's history.

Blount was a two-time SCAC Player of the Year, becoming just the second men's player in league history to earn back-to-back POTY honors and the first since Sewanee's Ryan Harrigan in 1996-97 and 1997-98. He and Harrigan also share the distinction of being the only two players in SCAC history to be named NABC First Team All-District two consecutive years.

During his career, Blount posted six games with 30-plus points which stands 10th in school history including three of the program's top scoring efforts. This season he also became the program's single-season leader for free throws made and attempted going 233 for 274.

Centenary finished the season with an 18-10 record marking the first winning season since the 2002-03 team went 16-12 and the most wins in a season since the 1989-90 team went 22-8.
