LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Among the 36,000 people signed up to run the Boston Marathon on Monday, two of them are from the South Plains.

Randal Guinn of Idalou, and Leigh Ralston of Lubbock will both fly to Boston on Friday morning, planning to run a little over 26 miles during the event. They are among about ten people from the Lubbock area who will participate.

Although Guinn is new to the Boston Marathon, his father participated in the race in 2011. Ralston also ran the marathon that same year, only 11 weeks after she gave birth to her son.

"It's such a wonderful and happy event, and you work so hard," Ralston said. "I just hate it to have what happened last year be what I remember about the Boston Marathon."

"We're not afraid and we're not intimidated by what happened last year," Ralston said.

Guinn and Ralston want to pay respect to the victims and lend their support to Boston, determined to "take back the finish line."

"I think the slogan this year is we all run together for Boston, so it's a huge community and we are all banded together," Guinn said. "We're not really going to back down over the attacks that happened."
