Police ID man killed in officer-involved shooting

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Tucson Police have identified the bank robbery suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting on Thursday.

Police say 35-year-old Santiago Avila was shot shortly before 2 p.m. at the Wells Fargo bank on East 22nd Street near Santa Rita Park.

According to police, a bank employee called 911 to say the bank was being robbed and that the suspect was still inside the building with a gun.

When the suspect walked outside the bank, still holding his weapon, officers were waiting for him.  According to a TPD release officers told the man to put down the gun, but the suspect allegedly did not listen and walked to a Jeep instead.

Police at the scene say he grabbed a box of ammunition from inside the Jeep and then tried to walk back into the bank.  Witnesses say this is when officers fired on the suspect, hitting him.

Officers tried to resuscitate the suspect, but he died at the scene.

Police say the suspect had an active felony warrant out of California for assault on an officer and escape.

Five officers were involved in the shooting, but police have not yet released their identities. None of the 16 people inside the bank, nor the officers at the scene were hurt in the incident.

The TPD Homicide unit will conduct a criminal investigation into the incident, while a separate investigation will be done by the Office of Internal Affairs on the actions of the police officers involved.
