LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT/AP) - A group of 15 linemen from electric cooperatives across Arkansas have returned home after spending nearly a month in Guatemala where they helped bring electricity to remote villages in the Central American country.
The group arrived in Guatemala on March 26 - then traveled about nine hours to the remote villages of Las Flores and La Hacienta to bring electricity to the area.
In addition to constructing power lines, the men distributed more than 1,000 pairs of shoes, hundreds of pairs of eye glasses, Bibles and other items to the villagers. The items were donated by Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas employees from across the state.
Combined with a similar, previous project, Arkansas electric cooperative linemen have now helped provided electric service to more than 770 rural Guatemala residents.
