HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) – A Trumann man was convicted Wednesday of sexual assaulting a 15-year old girl, according to the Second Judicial District Prosecutor's Office.
According to Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington's Office, Danny Akers was found guilty by a jury on two counts of sexual assault.
Akers was charged in March, 2013 after he was accused of having sex with an underage girl, who was also a former student of his. Akers admitted to have fathered a child with the student, according to testimony in court.
Akers, 37 at the time of his arrest, resigned from Trumann schools before any charges were filed in 2013. His trial started Monday with jury selection. The case was handed to the jury Wednesday morning.
The Second Judicial Prosecutor's Office said the state called five witnesses to the stand before resting. The defense rested their case without calling any witnesses.
On Wednesday afternoon, Akers was sentenced to 25 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. He had a $25,000 fine set.
