NEW ORLEANS (AStateRedWolves.com) - Arkansas State University senior Sharika Nelvis has been selected as the Sun Belt Conference's (SBC) Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week (April 23) for her noteworthy performance this past weekend at the Mt. SAC Relays.
Nelvis, who also received the same conference weekly recognition a week ago (April 16), set both a Sun Belt Conference and A-State record in the 100-meter hurdles at the Mt. SAC Relays last Saturday (April 19) with a first-place time of 12.71. Her record-setting performance is currently tops among the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Qualifiers and presently ranks as the second-best time nationally in NCAA-I competition this season. Nelvis eclipsed her previous record 12.84 time in the 100-meter hurdles semifinals at the 2013 NCAA-I National Outdoor Championships (6/8) in Eugene, Ore.
A native of Memphis, Tenn., Nelvis has presently earned the weekly conference award six times in her illustrious four-year A-State career. Nelvis is a two-time All-America performer in outdoor track having achieved second-team laurels in 2012 and 2013 first-team laurels both in the 100-meter hurdles. She has twice been honored as the Sun Belt Conference's Most Outstanding Women's Track Athlete (2012 and 2013).
Nelvis and the 41st nationally-ranked Red Wolves' women's team will be competing in the third annual Red Wolves Open this weekend (April 25-26) at the A-State Track and Field Complex in Jonesboro, Ark. The A-State men's squad will also be participating in the meet.
