ALTON, MO (KAIT) – A man accused of driving a patrol vehicle into a river Sunday night has been arrested.
According to the Oregon County Sheriff's Office, 26-year-old Jeffrey Wegener of Nebraska was arrested early Friday morning. The arrest was made without incident around 12:30 a.m. about 10 miles east of Alton on U.S. Highway 160.
Officers made the arrest following up on a reported sighting by an Oregon County resident.
Officers had been looking for Wegener since Sunday night when the sheriff's office said he stole a deputy's truck and drove it into the Eleven Point River. He was also thought to be armed with a machete.
Oregon and Ripley County, Missouri authorities as well as Randolph County, Arkansas authorities had been searching for Wegener.
Wegener was arrested on warrants for tampering with a motor vehicle and theft of stealing a firearm. Bond was set at $70,000.
