TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

On Thursday, members of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERFTF) arrested a Toledo area woman who had been on the run since 2010, when she failed to register as a sex offender.

Dawn Smith, 48, was convicted in July 2008 in Wood County Court of Common Pleas for the sexual assault of a juvenile under the age of 13. She was required to register her address with the sheriff's office annually for 10 years as part of her sentence. In December 2010, it was determined Smith had fled abruptly and the case was turned over to the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) in 2013.

After investigative work from the Wood County Sheriff's Office and the NOVFTF, as well as profiling Smith on WTOL, it was determined that Smith was hiding in Georgia.

The case was referred to the US Marshals SERFTF in Savannah and Task Force Officers arrested Smith in Millen, GA. She is currently awaiting extradition back to Ohio and may face federal charges for failure to register as a sex offender. She could spend up to 10 years behind bars if convicted federally.

"This arrest demonstrates the commitment the U.S. Marshal's Service has to tracking down non-compliant sex offenders, "said Pete Elliott, the U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Ohio. "Our dedicated officers work tirelessly to enforce the Adam Walsh Act, which is intended to make the community a safer place for everyone."

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act (AWA), which was passed in July 2006, names the U.S. Marshals Service as the primary federal agency to assist state and local law enforcement agencies with tracking and arresting non-compliant sex offenders nationwide. The Adam Walsh Act also provides a statute for Deputy U.S. Marshals to prosecute sex offenders federally for failing to register as a sex offender. The Act is named after Adam Walsh, who was abducted and murdered in Florida in 1981.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of a known fugitive is encouraged to contact the U.S. Marshals NOVFTF at 1-866-4-WANTED. You can also text keyword "WANTED" with the tip to TIP411. Tipsters may remain anonymous and a cash reward may be available.
