PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) – On Friday morning, the Area 1 Special Olympics kicked off on the football field of Paragould High School.
Schools from 6 different counties came out to compete in the day's events. Vonnie Greer, Codirector for the event, said the Special Olympics are something that everyone should be involved in.
"What they get out of it is a sense of humbleness, to see these athletes come out and do what they do and just the joy on their face," said Greer. "If you volunteer once, you will volunteer over and over again. I'm telling you, you do it once and you're hooked."
Skip Schalk has worked with the Special Olympics for at least 15 year and said working with these athletes is life changing.
"When you come out here and see these kids giving it their all and having a good time and getting to be in the light for one day and to be the special athlete that they are, it'll change your heart forever," said Schalk.
Winners from the events will compete at state.
