Disposing of unwanted drugs safely on Drug Take Back Day

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)-  Region 8 works to get rid of unwanted or expired drugs, keeping them off the streets.

Saturday was National Drug Take-Back Day. The Jonesboro Police Department was one of several collection sites where people could safely dispose of the meds.

Detective R.J. Smith said getting rid of the drugs protects children and people's homes. "I think the big risk is with kids. The other option we have had, where people have broken into houses and gone after pain medications and other narcotics," Smith said. "There's also street value in the drugs as well and it's one of the biggest drug problems we have in the U.S. right now"

The drop-box to safely dispose of the unwanted or expired prescriptions is available 24/7 at the Jonesboro Police Department.
