Local man starts foundation to bring awareness to SIDS

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Arkansas Department of Health reports over 250 babies died last year from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Jeff Osburn created the NEA SIDS Support and Awareness Foundation after his grandson, Trevor, passed away on Christmas Eve at just five months old.

"I remember the day that it happened," said Osburn. "My mom called me and I hung up on her because I thought I was dreaming."

However, it wasn't a dream. When Osburn arrived at the hospital his grandson had already passed away.

"I was like oh God I'm never going to see him again," said Osburn. "It's just not something I would wish upon anybody."

After he lost his grandchild Osburn realized there was little support in the area for families who had been affected by SIDS, and so he took it upon himself to create the support group.

"We want to offer counseling for anybody who loses a baby or infant," he said. "We also want to help offer monetary help for them."

Osburn said these options weren't available for him and his family.

"I look back on everything that was hardest for us and that's what I molded into this foundation," he said.

Counseling agencies and local businesses have already teamed up and donated. Families affected have also joined the group

"The goal is to be able to get those people in a counseling session and to be able to connect one on one with them, and understand what everybody is going through," he said.

Osburn said as this foundation continues to grow, he hopes to help families all over the state.

"We want to be able to come to somebody and offer them a smile of compassion, an ear to listen to their problems and a shoulder to cry on," he said.

NEA SIDS Support and Awareness Foundation is hosting their 1st annual 4 man scramble golf tournament at Sage Meadows Country Club on Saturday July 19th.

The cost of the tournament will be $500.00 per 4 man team. The price includes golf, cart, range balls, snacks and drinks, lunch, and prizes. Lunch will be served right after the tournament. Corporate sponsorships are available. Please call the foundation with any questions.
