JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - TheArkansas Department of Health reports over 250 babies died last year fromSudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Jeff Osburn created theNEA SIDS Support and Awareness Foundation after his grandson, Trevor, passedaway on Christmas Eve at just five months old.
"I remember the day thatit happened," said Osburn. "My mom called me and I hung up on her because Ithought I was dreaming."
However, it wasn't adream. When Osburn arrived at the hospital his grandson had already passedaway.
"I was like oh God I'm nevergoing to see him again," said Osburn. "It's just not something I would wishupon anybody."
After he lost hisgrandchild Osburn realized there was little support in the area for familieswho had been affected by SIDS, and so he took it upon himself to create the supportgroup.
"We want to offercounseling for anybody who loses a baby or infant," he said. "We also want tohelp offer monetary help for them."
Osburn said these options weren'tavailable for him and his family.
"I look back on everythingthat was hardest for us and that's what I molded into this foundation," hesaid.
Counseling agencies andlocal businesses have already teamed up and donated. Families affected havealso joined the group
"The goal is to be able toget those people in a counseling session and to be able to connect one on onewith them, and understand what everybody is going through," he said.
Osburn said as thisfoundation continues to grow, he hopes to help families all over the state.
"We want to be able tocome to somebody and offer them a smile of compassion, an ear to listen totheir problems and a shoulder to cry on," he said.
