LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

A proposed traffic switch scheduled to happen on the U.S. 59/Loop 287 N. Interchange project in Lufkin has been delayed due to equipment failure.

Shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Texas Department of Transportation Spokesperson Kathi White announced the project, which was supposed to open around 6 p.m., has been delayed to Wednesday afternoon.

White did not address the specifics as to what equipment failed or how, but says the part needed to fix the problem is expected to arrive Wednesday morning.

According to a press release, TxDot and its contractor Webber LLC out of Houston, are "planning to move northbound U.S. 59 traffic to the newly built direct connector bridge."

The traffic switch is expected to impact travel on several roadways including Westbound Loop 287 where traffic will have the option to take the loop or the new direct connector to U.S. 59 northbound. Those motorists can still take the FM 2021 exit, the release says.

The two ramp entrances from Loop 287 to U.S. 59 will be permanently closed once the northbound bridge is open.

White adds that safe driving is key to helping the traffic switch run smoothly.

"We need people to slow down and pay attention; particularly now that we're opening some new lanes. Things are going to be different, people maybe a little bit confused about where they should go, where they could go, and they may go somewhere and not realize the way to get there," White said. "So, basically just slow down and pay attention."
