MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Public Health has updated its annual fish consumption advisory. The advisory is based on data that is collected the previous fall by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.

The ADEM, Tennessee Valley Authority and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources collected samples of specific fish species from different bodies of water throughout the state for analysis during the fall of 2012. There were over 569 different samples taken from 51 collection stations. The ADPH assessed the results to determine if any of the tested contaminants in the fish may give rise to potential health effects in humans.

Fish consumption advisories are issued for specific bodies of water and specific species taken from those areas. Advisories are represented as the safe number of meals, of that species of fish, that can be eaten in a given time period. An example would be how many meals should be consumed of a certain species per week, per month or if the type of fish should not be consumed at all. A meal portion consists of six ounces of cooked fish or eight ounces of raw fish.

To view the updated consumption advisory issued for the 36 bodies of water that were tested, visit the ADPH website.
