The news broke at 4:51pm last Friday that Pulaski County Judge Chris Piazza struck down Arkansas' same-sex marriage ban. It's a polarizing issue and we all have an opinion. While I'm not going to talk about whether same-sex marriage is right or wrong, I am going to talk about timing.
For that reason I have to ask Judge Piazza, why issue such a controversial ruling so late on a Friday?
This put County Clerks across the state in a real bind. They were left without clear direction on how to carry out issuing same-sex marriage licenses, no time to update software because it currently doesn't support same sex entries, and wondering whether Region 8 counties are exempt because they weren't named as defendants in the lawsuit.
Not to mention our County Clerks are days away from the May 20th Primary Election.
And then there's public opinion. When it comes to emotional and impactful decisions this big, timing is everything! Timing it right shows sensitivity.
Time to prepare, whether in court decisions or with our own personal lives, will make this A Better Region 8.
