Authorities arrest 2 in Deatsville drug raid

DEATSVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

Around 30 federal, state and local law enforcement agents surrounded the home at 304 Sparrow Pointe Lane Friday night in Deatsville.

Authorities arrested Modesto Chavez and John Chavez. The U.S. Attorney's office says the suspects are mother and son.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Verne Speirs tells WSFA 12 News that undercover agents spent four months investigating the case. In addition to arresting the suspects, authorities also recovered six pounds of meth, several weapons including two AK-47s and several thousands of dollars in cash.

"This was a huge bust in terms of pounds," said Speirs. "The meth seized had a street value of more than $100,000."

Speirs adds the suspects were in 'the process of distributing the meth'.

Customers reportedly included people from Deatsville, Prattville and Montgomery.

If convicted Modesto Chavez and John Chavez can expect to spend a minimum of 10 years in prison just on the drug charges.

The suspects had their initial court appearance today with the judge officially informing them of the charges.
