On Your Side: Clearing up confusion over Star ID cards

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Congress took steps to better protect all of us against the ongoing threat of terrorist activity after September 11.

The REAL ID Act of 2005 modified federal law where it applies to driver's license and identification cards. The state of Alabama created the Star ID, which is the same as a REAL ID.

Alabamians will have to present additional documents specified by the REAL ID Act of 2005. Upon fulfilling the issuance procedures required, these applicants will receive an Alabama Star ID, which will serve as valid identification for official federal government purposes.

There seems to be some confusion about the deadline for acquiring the new cards.

A FOX6 viewer named Danny emailed the FOX6 newsroom saying:

"The Alabama Department of Public Safety's website states that the deadline for acquiring a Star (or REAL) ID is December 1, 2014. However, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security states that REAL IDs will not be required to board commercial aircraft 'before 2016.'"

FOX6 Consumer Anchor/Reporter Ronda Robinson contacted the state Department of Public Safety to help sort this all out.

Spokesperson Sgt. Steve Jarrett responded, "The law says December 2014. DPS is in compliance with the law. DHS will not begin their enforcement of the law no sooner than 2016."

In the future, only those state-issued driver licenses and identification cards which are fully compliant with the REAL ID Act of 2005 will be authorized for purposes such as boarding commercial aircraft and entering certain regulated federal facilities.

*Those persons who hold a valid United States passport may use this document in place of the required REAL or Star ID.
