Carolina earns 40th win with victory over Citadel

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

Freshman right-hander Reed Scott did not allow an earned run in seven innings of work while the Gamecocks' starting lineup combined for 10 hits and nine walks en route to a 10-1 victory over The Citadel on Tuesday night at Carolina Stadium. Eighth ranked South Carolina improves to 40-13 and seals its 15th consecutive season with at least 40 wins while the loss drops the Bulldogs to 20-32.

Scott earned his second win of the season and is now 2-0 on the year. He allowed just one unearned run on four hits and struck out seven batters. The Citadel starter Nate Brecklin suffers the loss and falls to 0-1 on the year.

South Carolina broke ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Bulldogs' starter Nate Brecklin hit Marcus Mooney with a pitch to open the frame and followed with a walk to Taylor Widener. Kyle Martin drove in Mooney for the first run of the game. Widener and Martin both scored on a pair of RBI groundouts from Grayson Greiner and Joey Pankake.

The Citadel took advantage of a Gamecock error and plated a run in the top of the second.

The Gamecocks responded with two runs in the third inning. Widener led off with a single to right field and after Joey Pankake drew a walk, DC Arendas dropped a base hit to left center that drove in Widener. A pair of walks to English and Cone brought home Pankake and increased South Carolina's lead to 5-1.

A leadoff double from Mooney and a RBI single off the bat of Widener scored another run for the Gamecocks in the bottom of the fourth. Tanner English drew a walk to open the following frame and quickly stole second. After a throwing error by the Bulldogs' catcher moved him to third and Gene Cone walked, the duo completed a double steal with English making it home.

South Carolina scored two more in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the scoring.  Greiner extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the sixth inning with a single followed by a double by Pankake.  Arendas would drive in Greiner with a RBI groundout and English brought home Pankake with a RBI base hit.  Martin's third RBI of the game came in the seventh inning and accounted for the 10th run of the game.

Martin went 3-for-5 to lead the Gamecocks at the plate.  Mooney doubled twice and scored three runs.  Widener and Pankake also scored two runs apiece as well.

A presser hasn't gone by without LSU Head Coach Ed Orgeron talking up true freshman Myles Brennan. The St. Stanislaus alum is turning heads with his rocket arm, and accuracy with wide receivers. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada also is a big fan of Brennan, and thinks things will only get better for the backup as the 2017 season progresses. "Myles has gotten better every week.
