Fellow Birmingham police officers and community members raised their candles high Wednesday evening to honor the life and legacy of Birmingham Police Officer Keary Hollis.

Hollis was shot and killed outside an Ensley convenience store while he was off-duty last weekend. A suspect has been charged with capital murder in his death.

The vigil was held at the West Precinct, where Hollis worked. He was a five-year veteran of the force. The West Precinct is located at 616 19th Street in Ensley.

"I'm kind of a little bit still in disbelief," co-worker Officer Frederick Wesley said.

Wesley says he rode with Hollis a number of times.

"I wish I could kind of go about life the way he did. I mean even if he was upset you couldn't tell. If there was one word to describe him it would be silly, but it would be a good silly," said Wesley.

"It's a hard thing to see somebody you go through the academy with and you know and you talk to him a week before and then something like this happens," Officer Joel Jacobs said.

For officers, they said their friend's death is a reminder that life is short.

Community groups and the BPD Chaplain's Corp are organizing the vigil.

And while this isn't the way they wanted to meet the people they serve their precense at Wednesday's vigil showed them they're not along when they lose one of their own.

"There's a not a whole lot of time you get a time when people come up to you and tell you thank you for what you do, " said Wesley.

Hollis' viewing is set for Friday, May 16 and his funeral will be held Saturday, May 17 at the Greater New Antioch Baptist Church in Ensley. He will be buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
