HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The father of an infant who was allegedly stabbed by her mother has been granted emergency custody.

Natasha Deann Townsend is accused of stabbing her 3-month-old daughter, Skyler Renae Nunnery.

The child's father, Kevin Nunnery, is at his daughter's bed side in a Birmingham hospital.

Nunnery filed for and was granted emergency custody of Skyler. The judge also granted a protective order for Nunnery and the child.

Nunnery said he is not in a relationship with Townsend. He said the child's mother was not on any medication and doesn't suffer from depression.

Nunnery said he never saw any indication that Townsend would ever harm their child.

Townsend is charged with attempted murder in the case and her bond was set at $60,000. Investigators believe Townsend intended to kill the child and then herself. They said she bought a butcher knife at a Walmart and used it to stab the girl multiple times.

After cutting the child, investigators said Townsend handed the girl off to relatives at a home on Neptune Drive Saturday.

Nunnery was asked about a questionable Facebook post on Townsend's page that said, "I can't live this life anymore; my baby deserves a better life." Nunnery said he didn't see the post until after the stabbing.

Skyler remains in the hospital in critical condition. Her father said she is expected to leave the intensive care unit in a day or so.

A donation fund has been established to help with medical expenses. If you would like to donate, go to any Wells Fargo and contribute to the Skyler Nunnery Fund.
