MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC) -

Ann Marie Corgill, a fourth grade teacher at Cherokee Bend Elementary in Mountain Brook, has taken top honors for her work.

Corgill will serve as the official spokesperson and representative for Alabama teachers throughout the next year.

"Ann Marie Corgill is a shining example of professionalism and dedication to Alabama's most valued asset - its children," State Superintendent Dr. Tommy Bice said.

Corgill originally planned on designing and building homes but found herself passionate about teaching.

"Day after day, year after year, I realize that my job is not simply about teaching, but reaching students by learning about them, honoring their passions, helping them overcome obstacles, and building foundations so they can achieve their goals, both as learners and people," Corgill said.

Corgill has taught fourth grade at Cherokee Bend Elementary School since 2012. Previously, she taught English for three years at Hewitt-Trussville Middle School and also worked in the New York Public School System.

Christopher Payne, an art instructor at Dothan High School, has been named the 2014 Alternate State Teacher of the Year.

Payne says he works to unlock his students' hidden potential by motivating them to believe in themselves.

"I believe every single child has the ability to learn and create," Payne said.
