COLUMBIA, SC (TheBigSpur) - South Carolina offered Damascus (Md.) athlete Jalen Christian first and that move paid dividends this afternoon as the four-star athlete committed to the Gamecocks.

Christian is the No. 1 overall prospect in the state of Maryland. His recruitment was headed up by South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus.

"South Carolina made me feel at home," Christian said Wednesday afternoon. "I have a great relationship with (quarterbacks) coach G.A. Mangus and (wide receivers) coach [Steve] Spurrier, Jr. I felt comfortable there."

The nation's No. 8 athlete chose South Carolina over offers from Maryland, Nebraska, Duke, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, Ohio State and many others.

"South Carolina reminds me of my hometown," Christian said. "Everything around the town is based around the football team."

Mangus headed up his recruitment for the Gamecocks.

"He did a great job," Christian said. "He was always checking up on me frequently. He would always ask about my family. It wasn't just about football."

The nation's No. 97 overall prospect and No. 1 recruit in Maryland will play slot receiver for South Carolina.

"They are getting a go-getter," Christian said. "I'm a guy that can make a cut and pick up more yards. I can also make an impact returning punts and kicks."
