POCAHONTAS, AR  (KAIT) – A Region 8 woman accused of stealing money from people who paid for headstones appeared in court Monday, according to the Randolph County Circuit Court Clerk's Office.

Mary Waddell, of Pocahontas, was charged with felony theft of property after several people filed complaints with the Pocahontas Police Department. The complaints alleged that Waddell, who operated Pocahontas Monument, formerly Cawvey Monument, pocketed the money for headstones.

Pocahontas Police Chief Cecil Tackett said at least 30 people have come forward with claims against Waddell, totaling more than $40,000.

Waddell was arrested in Mississippi after she was reported missing from Pocahontas in May. Arkansas State Police was requested to put out a Silver Alert for Waddell. Surveillance video showed her in a Tunica casino, Tackett said.

As a condition of her bond, Waddell was required to wear an ankle bracelet, seek counseling for gambling addiction, pay $1,000 per month in restitution and cannot have access to a vehicle.

Waddell is set to appear in court again on October 2nd, 2014.
