Retired Jonesboro police officer killed in storm

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro police have confirmed that a retired officer was killed during Thursday's storm.

According to Jonesboro Police Sgt. Doug Formon, retired officer Tom Sanford, 74, of Jonesboro was killed when a tree fell on his house.

Much of the community is mourning the loss of Sanford.

"He loved his job and he loved the police department," said Former Craighead County Sheriff Jack McCann.

Chief Deputy Rick Thomas and McCann worked alongside Sanford for many years at the Jonesboro Police Department. During their time there Stanford became more than just a colleague.

"You couldn't have a conversation with Tom without laughing," said McCann.

Known for his kind personality and ability to make anyone laugh, Sanford was admired and most remembered as a family man.

"His family came first," said McCann. "His wife who passed away four or five years ago meant the world to him."

He was also a beloved father and grandfather.

"His nickname in the family was papa bear," said Thomas.

After retirement Sanford worked at the ASU Convocation Center. He was well known with fans and many of the players.

"The Convocation doors never opened without him being there," said Thomas.

His friends said he put his heart in all he did. He loved his family, his job and the people he surrounded himself with.

"He's going to be sorely missed," said McCann. "He was a good friend, good police officer and an asset to the community."
