ASU closed Friday due to storm

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Arkansas State University is closed Friday due to the storm.

Administrators closed the campus Thursday afternoon after the storm passed and set up an emergency operations center in the Information Technology Services building.

Three people had minor injuries caused by falling debris, according to an administrator.

Before the injuries were reported, ASU Chancellor Tim Hudson issued the following statement:

Thursday, June 5, 2:39 p.m.

Although Arkansas State has experienced a severe wind storm today, no injuries have been reported.  Some trees are down, some power lines are down, and some building roofs have been damaged.

We have about 500 students living in residence halls, and additional students attending cheerleading camp remain safe at the Convocation Center.  Thus far, no injuries have been reported.

University officials have engaged the emergency operations center and are working immediately to secure damaged buildings, to clear roadways, and continue to assess the damage.

The university is closed for the remainder of the day.  Further information will be announced as it becomes available.

The administration building was evacuated due to roof damage and flooding.

Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Rick Stripling said administrators are working with City Water & Light to restore power to the campus.

"We've got some roof damage on some of the buildings, some of the administration buildings. We've got some with shingles off of our buildings. Obviously trees, tree limbs down," he said.

About 500 people are living on campus this summer and some may have to relocate.

"We've got some summer camps. We've got some cheerleading groups here. Fortunately, they were all in the convocation center at the time which is a safe shelter area."

Campus updates can be found on the university's Facebook and Twitter pages.
