Disaster assistance requested for residents in Craighead County

JONESBORO, AR  (KAIT) – Craighead County Judge Ed Hill declared the county a disaster Monday after last week's severe windstorm, according to documents provided to Region 8 News.

According to the Disaster Emergency Declaration, Hill said the conditions after the storm presented a threat to the safety and welfare of the county.

Hill asked the state to accept his request for individual assistance for homeowners. In his request, four private homes were destroyed, while five sustained major damage. In all, 74 homes sustained some type of damage.

Hill also asked for public assistance, which includes debris removal, emergency protective measures and utilities.

As of Monday night, current estimated damage to various utility systems $8,000,000. Multiple power poles were snapped by the high wind on Thursday and by falling tree limbs.

Hill estimated the cost of debris removal at $280,000.
