MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - Towering over the Midtown Kroger, the Belvedere Apartments have long been a fixture of Midtown. But, it is not far away from being demolished to bring new life to the area.

"I think it's gonna be a great asset to the community," said Midtown resident Ronald Williams.

The demolition could have been completed sooner, but Kroger abandoned any thought of imploding the old Belvedere all at once after consulting with neighbors.

"We're taking it down piece by piece, starting at the top and bringing it down. It'll probably take six to eight weeks to bring that down and demolish it," said Joe Bell.

Steve Montgomery pastors Idlewild Presbyterian Church directly across the street. He says the grocer has been mindful from the start.

"We were really pleased with the way they listened to us," said Montgomery. "Grace Saint Luke's has some beautiful Tiffany windows that are valuable. We have a great beautiful, gothic cathedral here, and they paid attention to it. Rather than just imploding it, they're really taking it step by step."

Once the former apartment building is gone, a new grocery will be built in its place. Eventually, the famed Midtown Kroger as Memphis knows it will be leveled as well.

However, this is only day one.

"I would just encourage them to watch that thing being built, and they're going to enjoy what they find," added Bell.

Meaning, there will be something to see here for years.

The building should be gone in about two months and the new grocery store is expected to open mid-to-late 2015 or early 2016.
