TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Have you ever wondered what a day in the life of a Toledo police officer is like? You have a chance to get an inside look at their training and maybe even ride along with them.

This is something the Toledo Police Department hasn't done in years. They are opening up a Citizens Police Academy and they want you to apply.

The Citizens Academy allows community members to get an inside look at all of the training it takes to become a Toledo police officer. You will get a chance to do a ride-along, go to the shooting range, and learn about the dangers and rewards of working with the department.

Police say one of their main goals of this academy is to improve an already strong relationship with the public.

"So that the citizens have an idea of who we are and what we do. And the other part of it is to just give the citizens a firsthand overview of how the police department works," said Sergeant Joe Heffernan.

The Citizens Academy will start in September. It is a 10-week course with classes once a week in the evenings. Police say class size is limited so if you're interested sign up as soon as you can.
