MARIUPOL, UKRAINE (Radio Free Europe/CNN) - In southeastern Ukraine, government forces reclaimed the port city of Mariupol from the hands of pro-Russian rebels.

At least five separatists were reported killed in the fighting.

The government's offensive in the city is part of a broader military operation to reclaim territory from separatists in the country's east.

Buildings were riddled with holes left from shelling and gunfire, and there was a security presence in the streets. Smoldering military equipment also was visible.
