Local veteran uses paper trail to combat VA problems

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

An error in records left one veteran out of options when it came to getting care at the Wilmington VA clinic.

It was there in black and white, Steve Crandall's last name had been changed to "Crabtree."

"It was like immaculate conception. Mr. Crabtree was born and Mr. Crandall died," Carol Crandall said.

The Crandall's discovered Steve's name had been changed when they showed up for an appointment in April, and the mix up has left the Vietnam veteran and his wife with more questions than answers.

It wasn't until the Crandall's followed a trail of paper back to the start of the problem that they discovered the solution was in the ink.

"If I didn't have it on a piece of paper, I couldn't prove to anybody that this happened to him," Carol said. "I think it would have been brushed under the table because they would have said, ‘I don't know what you're talking about.'"

The Crandall's say they were able to take the files to Congressman Mike McIntyre's office.

"Eight months of making these requests and trying to get him in to see a doctor, we got nowhere," Carol said. "You go to the congressional …and within the week he gets an appointment in the mail."

However, Steve says it was the advice from a friend that ultimately lead to the answers he needed.

"Never, never, never ever give up," Steve said.
